About Us
Oak Tree Family Assessment and Treatment opened its doors in February 2025 with the goal of serving children, individuals, families and family law professionals in Utah. Led by Dr. Valerie Hale and Dr. Todd Dunn, our clinic boasts over 50 years of experience working in high-conflict family law settings, helping families and courts focus on children and meet their best interest. Our clinic specializes in providing balanced custody evaluations and court-involved therapy services that follow AFCC guidelines and are rooted in current research. We also provide mental health services and workshops that help children, adults, couples, and families build confidence, connection, and wellbeing.

Court-Involved Therapy
We provide therapy services for individuals involved in court-related family matters, with no waitlist, ensuring timely access to mental health support. We also work with children, adults, couples, and families who are not involved in custody litigation.

Mediation Based Custody Consultation
A Mediation Based Custody Consultation (MBCC) is a brief process that allows parents and their attorneys to obtain information from a child custody evaluator that may help them settle their differences in mediation. The child custody expert interviews parents and children and reviews pertinent documents for your case. This information is then used to discuss Utah Rule 4-903 factors and the children’s best interest in the mediation context to help families settle. This information remains completely confidential and may never be used in a court setting.

Other Court-Involved Evaluations
Parent Time Evaluations, Limited Scope Evaluations, and Brief Focused Assessments are all considered Utah Rule 4-902 evaluations. These evaluations provide the court information on key issues to help with settlement or adjudication. These evaluations do not lead to custody recommendations because they lack the breadth and depth of full Utah Rule 4-903 evaluations.
A Forensic Psychological Evaluation provides the court information on a parent’s psychological functioning (e.g., stresses, coping strategies, cognitive abilities, relationship skills, etc.). These evaluations often address how a parent’s psychological functioning may impact their parenting ability.
